The ASMBS Releases Updated Position Statement on Sleeve Gastrectomy as a Bariatric Procedure
The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) has previously published two position statements on the use of sleeve gastrectomy (SG) as a bariatric procedure.[1,2] These position statements were developed in response to inquiries made to the society by patients, physicians, hospitals, health insurance payers, the media, and others regarding new procedures or issues within our specialty that require close evaluation and evidence-based scrutiny.

American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ Conference Raises Questions About Triglyceride Lowering
At the 2011 annual American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) meeting, findings were released from a Kansas-based study measuring triglyceride levels of 229 liposuction patients before and after fat-reduction plastic surgery. Patients with high triglyceride levels before surgery averaged a 43% decrease of the harmful fats in their blood three months post-surgery along with a decrease in white blood cell count, which is another risk factor in the development of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.

First Gastric Plication in Houston Performed by Texas Laparoscopic Consultants
Dr. Sherman Yu and Dr. Terry Scarborough are announcing the successful completion of the first gastric plication in Houston at their Texas Laparoscopic Consultants practice. The Houston bariatric surgeons say the new procedure allows them to limit the capacity of the stomach from an average of 32 ounces of liquid to four ounces without the need for foreign devices associated with the LAP-BAND® System, or cutting of the stomach used in the vertical sleeve gastrectomy.
