Sherman C. Yu, M.D.
Dr. Sherman Yu is a native Houstonian who grew up in the Southwest part of the city. He attended the University of Texas at Austin where he graduated with High Honors in Chemical Engineering, and then returned to Houston where he received his medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine, with honors in his surgical rotations.
After finishing his studies, Dr. Yu performed his surgical training at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver. It was there that he developed a special interest in minimally invasive and laparoscopic surgical techniques, especially in the field of obesity surgery. While still a resident physician, he authored many research articles and presented at national conferences.
After completing his year as chief resident in surgery, Dr. Yu returned to Houston to complete a year-long fellowship in minimally invasive and robotic surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center. One of the main focuses in that training was bariatric surgery, as the UT Health Science Center was the main tertiary referral center for the greater Houston area. During this time, he continued to perform research in the field of obesity surgery, publishing multiple articles in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at both national and international meetings. After completion of his fellowship, Dr. Yu was asked to stay on as an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center, which he did until June of 2008. Dr. Yu then joined Dr. Terry Scarborough to create Texas Laparoscopic Consultants in the Texas Medical Center, where they currently practice together.
Recently, Dr. Yu was named one of America’s Top Surgeons by Consumers Research Council of America and is a Centers of Excellence surgeon, as recognized by the Surgical Review Corporation. In addition to being certified in the LAP-BAND system of adjustable gastric banding, he is also a proctor for Ethicon EndoSurgery, training surgeons around the country in the Realize Adjustable Gastric Band. Dr. Yu teaches surgical fellows in advanced endoscopy for SAGES (Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons) and is a member in good standing for the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
Dr. Yu is the Bariatric Medical Director at Park Plaza Hospital and was the first surgeon in the Houston area to perform a Single Incision Laparoscopic (SILS) adjustable gastric band procedure. He also performed the first Single Incision Laparoscopic gastric sleeve in Houston. TLC Surgery now routinely performs SILS adjustable gastric banding and gastric sleeve procedures.
Dr. Yu’s practice is specialized in the comprehensive treatment of obesity. He continues to dedicate himself to the care of his patients, research in the field of obesity surgery and the advancement of surgical techniques.
